This paper documents the journey of conversations conducted between counsellor Carolyn Markey, eleven year old Jesse, fourteen year old Josh and their mother, Joanne, all who have been deeply effected by domestic violence. A compilation of transcribed conversations, personal letters and drawings, 'It was not the words that hit mum' uncovers the ways in which children can be deeply affected by domestic violence and how they learn to survive.
